Fasting & Fertility

IDM Educator Nadia Pateguana talks PCOS and fertility.

My name is Nadia Pateguana and I’m one of the IDM Educators. My focus has always been on diet and Metabolic Syndrome.

I started Low-Carb 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and couldn’t get pregnant; and then fasting five years ago after my second pregnancy!

Becoming an IDM Educator allows me to use my personal and professional experience to help thousands of people. But I also learn from my clients – as much, if not more than they learn from me. I bring this learning experience to my groups. Like the other Educators, I can empathize because I, too, have been through it, and follow this way of life, personally and professionally.

PCOS
Like many of you, some of the IDM Educators have struggled with PCOS. I started following a Low-Carb diet 10 years ago when, after getting off the birth control pill, I could not successfully conceive. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was prescribed fertility treatments. I decided to try a Low Carb Diet and now have two daughters: one eight and the other five. After the second baby, I started implementing fasting consistently as well.

The many manifestations of PCOS including acne, hirsutism, central obesity, irregular periods and ovulation, infertility, depression and anxiety.

PCOS is an insulin-resistant condition and one of the most common endocrine (hormonal) condition affecting women in their reproductive years. Not only is it extremely debilitating, but women with PCOS are at a much greater risk for the development of all other Metabolic Syndrome associated conditions such as obesity, diabetes, CVD and cancer, to name but a few.

As Dr. Fung has said in our PCOS blogs: “If the problem is too much insulin, the solution then, is to lower insulin.” The most effective way to do this is to choose foods that are going to have the lowest insulin response and to fast for appropriate periods of time.

When women follow a low carb diet and intermittently fast appropriately they not only lose weight, but can regulate their menstrual cycles, often conceive and then have a much healthier pregnancy and baby.”

We have a specific course and many blog posts on PCOS in our resources.
