Rewind: Fasting and Autophagy

Dr. Fung explains the way the body rejuvenates during fasting

500,000 downloads of the Low Carb MD podcast!

A special thank you to all of our listeners and guests for sharing, supporting and helping us reach so many people. Every day, we hear stories of ordinary people who have found our podcast and changed the way they live their lives – and their family’s lives – for the better.

Perhaps just as interesting are the number of physicians reaching out to us, who say they are changing their practice after listening to our podcast. We could not be more humbled and honoured, and we hope you continue to share this aggregation of stories and insights.

PMS and Insulin Resistance

Nadia Pateguana examines the role of Insulin Resistance in so many reproductive issues

IDM has worked with women of all ages for many years. In fact, Megan Ramos is currently focusing on a series of blogs on Women and Fasting.

Reproductive health is of particular importance to me because it’s how I got interested in Low Carb and Intermittent fasting in the first place. My own reproductive struggles brought me here. This, for me, included PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), infertility, as well as a mood disorder. (Hypertension, diabetes, cancer and obesity came later.) My PMS was serious.

After working with many women, we’ve learnt that PMS seems to be severe in women who are more Insulin Resistant (those that are obese, have diabetes, PCOS, fatty liver, etc.).

I’ve even worked with some women with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, which is a more severe form of PMS. Symptoms might include depression, anxiety, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and sleeping, palpitations, pain, bloating, cravings or headaches – all of which are intense and debilitating. Further, these symptoms often start two weeks before your cycle and last a few days into your period. (In other words, the majority of the month, almost all the time.) PMS and PMDD should never be disregarded.

What can we do about it? Studies and clinical evidence show that insulin is involved in this pathophysiology, just like it is in PCOS. Lowering insulin is the solution.

Insulin resistance, shown by HOMA-IR tests, is affected by our reproductive hormones, including progesterone. And we know that, in turn, insulin affects our reproductive hormones (look at PCOS and infertility). During the early luteal phase (after ovulation) insulin resistance is at its highest. This is the time when fasting seems the hardest for most women and cravings start to go up.

There are dietary strategies that we can implement to lower insulin and improve these symptoms. A three- to four-month approach is key in managing PMS and/or PMDD.

Don’t underestimate the role of Insulin Resistance in these issues. I’m proof that you can make real changes.
