These are non-cancerous tumours that grow in the womb. Their growth affects the uterus and menstrual cycle. Fibroids are as small as an apple seed and can grow to as big as a grapefruit. Polyps are less than a centimetre in diameter, but in rare cases they can grow to the size of an orange. Both have similar symptoms.
Causes: Cervical infections, chronic inflammation, an abnormal response to the hormone oestrogen, clogged blood vessels near the cervix
Symptoms: Periods that are heavier than usual, bleeding after sex, bleeding after menopause, vaginal discharge that stinks due to infection
